... Cape Hatteras... from the 2007 trip... the Hatteras Lighthouse at its newer site. The lighthouse and all attendant structures were moved 2,900 feet inland,
to avoid threatening shoreline erosion in 1999. Hatteras, as well as most of the Outer Banks Islands are really just large piles of sand, which are constantly shifting.
Hatteras Island moves approximately thirteen feet to the west each year.
