Tehachapi Loop . Watercolor . 12" x 16"
... The Tehachapi Loop in Kerne County, California, was engineered by William Hood, a 19 year old Dartmouth College dropout and Union Army
veteran... and built by the Southern Pacific Railway in 1876... as a passage over the Tehachapi Mountains. Track elevation from the desert floor to the
Tehachapi summit, rises 2,734 feet over 16 miles. The ingenious Tehachapi loop section, crosses over itself as the 2% grade rail bed climbs in a spiral
within a relatively flat plateau. Since 1996, this rail line connecting Bakersfield and Mojave, is owned by the Union Pacific Railroad which also extends
track useage rights to the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway. This watercolor was painted for a Bella Terra Maps publication.
