Cape Canaveral Lighthouse #2 with Keeper's Cottage . Florida . Watercolor . 12" x 16"
... after my first visit and subsequent watercolor painting in 2017, a new, replica Keeper's House has been erected by the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Foundation, along side the existing light, which is the second light tower to be built on this site... a 151-foot tall, brick lined, iron plate tower... erected in 1848. Shortly after construction, this old tower was moved inland, to escape the approach of higher tides. A winding exterior staircase leads to an elevated entrance, located 30-feet above grade, to avoid any storm surge flooding... inside the 3 story, stacked residence within the tower's core. Eventually a keeper's house and auxiliary buildings were built adjacent, as life inside the iron encased rooms was unbearable in the oppressive heat of summer. All of those ancillary buildings were removed in the 1960's, except for the original, red brick, oil storage building. This new, ADA accessible, reproduction cottage and out buildings, were constructed 2019, designed and designated as a museum and education center.
