Barnegat Light – NJ

Watercolor… from the September, 2012 road trip. Another George Meade designed lighthouse… built a few years before the Civil War in 1858. This 172-foot tall tower replaced an 1835 tower that fell in 1857. This newer light tower, known as “Old Barney”, originally had a keeper’s triplex sitting adjacent, but that building was abandoned and removed following severe storm damage in 1920. Barnegat Lighthouse sits at the northern tip of Long Beach Island in New Jersey. Long Beach Island is one of several skinny barrier islands that sit off the New Jersey coast, facing the Atlantic Ocean… this entire island got hit pretty hard in October, 2012 by Hurricane Sandy.. but the light’s still good.
