Watercolor… The original roadbed & track along side the Cuyahoga River in Ohio, was laid by the Valley Railroad in 1880. The Valley Railroad was bought by the Cleveland Terminal & Valley Railroad in 1894 and then by the The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) in 1915. The Chessie System (Chesapeake & Ohio Railway (C&O)) then operated the line until 1985. The track is now owned by the National Park Service and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVRS) operates excursion rail trips through this part of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The 1931, Brecksville-Northfield High Level Bridge is an open span, five arch, concrete structure, 145 feet high and 1,132 feet long, carrying Route 82 across the Cuyahoga River and adjacent Ohio and Erie Canal and flood plane, connecting Cuyahoga and Summit Counties, Ohio. In 2018 the Brecksville dam below the bridge was scheduled to be removed and the river restored to its earlier, unimpeded flow. As of 2020… the dam is gone.
Illustrated are a pair of CVRS FPA-4 locomotives, #6771 and #6777, built by the Montreal Locomotive Works in 1959, originally for the Canadian National Railroad… heading an excursion train of Budd and Pullman passenger coaches and the CVRS’s “Silver Bronco” dome car. I rode this train from Rockside Station to Akron and back in 2015.
