Watercolor… Giant’s Causeway was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 and a National Nature Reserve, covering roughly 200 acres, in 1987, by the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland. It is a coastal geographical mass of mostly hexagonal, interlocking basalt columns, some reaching as high as 39 feet. The columns were formed by cooling fissures and fractures, following volcanic eruptions approximately 50 or 60 million years ago. These cliffs are over 300 feet tall. The view in this painting however, does not illustrate those unique basalt columns, as they are located farther along on the coast.
