NS EMD SD70ACe: 1026

Watercolor… ¬†Grade Crossing 588 605M, Milepost HP 34.5 West Main 1, Linfield, Pennsylvania. The EMD SD70 was introduced in 1992 and new and improved variants continued to roll out as of 2016. Norfolk Southern’s (NS) first SD70 was delivered in 1993, with the original narrow front hood of the previous generation 60 Series, before the SD70M advanced the wider head end, “North American Safety Cab”… first introduced by the Montreal Locomotive Works in the US, on the Providence & Worcester Railroad (PWRZ) in 1974. Between 2005 and 2010, General Motors sold its Electro Motive Division to Progress Rail Services Corporation, a Caterpillar company and EMD was renamed as Electro Motive Diesel. By the end of 2016, Caterpillar formally renamed EMD as simply, Progress Rail… and the venerable GM/EMD name and acronym is now history.

Illustrated… NS #1026… is a 2012 build of the SD70ACe upgrade, in production between 2004 and 2014, a Tier 3 compliant diesel electric locomotive, producing 4,300 hp… with later models rated at 4,500-horse power and 3,400 kW. EMD’s (Progress Rail) most recent model of the SD70ACe-T4 (Tier 4)… a 4,400 hp locomotive, was unveiled in October of 2015.
