Watercolor… Prince Edward Island. The distance between Cape Traverse and Cape Torementine is the shortest distance across the Northumberland Strait, at roughly 8-1/2 miles between the closest harbours… being Port Borden on Prince Edward Island and Cape Torementine inlet on the coast of New Brunswick, Canada. Range light pairs, kept in visual alignment, indicating the direct route to a destination, are very common on Prince Edward. And until 1997, when the Confederation Bridge was built to extend the Trans-Canada Highway and physically connect the mainland to the island, the white and red, Port Borden Range Lights, lit the way, guiding ferries, commercial and commerce vessels, back and forth. As the new bridge was completed and entered into service, the 1917, 42-foot tall, square tapered, wooden, Rear Range Light tower was deactivated and moved to its present commemorative park location, where it now sits dark, but kept in good repair and paint, although minus its earlier, distinctive red, vertical seaward stripe. As Prince Edwards coastlines go… the scoured, extended rock, Confederation Bridge seawall is quite stout. The 22-foot tall, Front Range Light, deactivated the same year, is located on the east side of the Port Borden inlet and a 3rd light, at 28-feet, marks the point of the entrance pier breakwater.
