San Francisco Power House

Watercolor… The San Francisco Cable Car Museum is built around the Washington – Mason Power House and Car Barn on Nob Hill. There are two
viewing levels of the cable power apparatus… the upper level provides a look at the GE motors (originally steam powered engines) and 14 foot
diameter spinning cable sheaves (grooved wheels) and the lower level provides access to the cables as they enter and exit through their respective
channels beneath the streets… allowing the surface trolleys to be pulled along. Being an east coast lad, I was surprised to see the Philadelphia Gear
nameplates on the reduction gear housings. These particular gears have been in continuous operation since their installation as part of a massive
rehabilitation by the City… of the entire trolley cable system in 1982.
