Watercolor… from my 2012 coastal tour of New Jersey lighthouses… the brick Sea Girt lighthouse was built in 1896. The Coast Guard assumed operation of the light from 1939 until it’s decommission in 1955. At that time, the state of New Jersey declined to assume ownership and the facility was purchased by the town of Sea Girt for use as a library and community center. By 1980 the facility had fallen into disrepair and was closed. The following year a Citizens Committee was formed, funds were raised and presently the restored lighthouse is open approximately 200 days a year for tours and special events.
